The new selector of the men’s national team of Serbia, Tony Gerona, was presented at a press conference in Belgrade.
- This is a big challenge for me. Many coaches would be happy to have this opportunity to find themselves in a situation to be coaches to great players like Serbia has. I know how historically important handball is here, and that this is a national team with a great tradition and results. I have always had excellent relations with Serbian players with whom I cooperated. I like their mentality. When Dragan (Skrbic) invited me two years ago, there was no opportunity to cooperate, but I always had in mind the job in the Serbian national team – said Gerona and added:
- I talked to many people, not only with the players. With Nenad Perunicic, Darko Stanic, Dejan Peric and many others. I also talked to the guys who were part of the national team at the previous European Championship, but also to those who were not at the championship. The basis of everything, when entering a business, is to do a good analysis, so I need information. Due to the current situation, it is obvious that it is not possible to organize a gathering. Vanja Ilić, who plays for my club Chartres, has been in the training process for a month, however, the players from Veszprem or Germany are not, and then there is too much risk. It is risky to make a gathering. We will probably organize joint video meetings, where we will start working and analyzing. We are still talking about the people in the expert staff. We had a long meeting yesterday, we put some names on paper. We will see, we have seriously approached thinking about people who will work in the younger categories.
